Reflection- 3rd Six Weeks; End of Semester

This semester in this class has brought me fun and anger, a learning experience and and terrible one. I've learned how terrible a Mac can be, yet how enjoyable using one can be if it doesn't hate you. I've enjoyed my time in this class, and I've learned a lot about Pages, Photoshop, and Numbers. As you can see in my showcase below, I've done pretty well in Photoshop- and I'll keep using the skills I learned there to create presentations for other classes as well. My favorite project was, of course, in Photoshop because of the creativity involved; my least favorite (equally obvious) was in Illustrator, which seemed determine to kill my brain cells slowly.
Anyway, this is PaulyD, signing off for a while yet.

Reflection

As some sharp people might have noticed, I was absent on December 7th. Sorry! Field trip.
Anyway, today I finished the picture of the evil cat that ruled the other world:

You can't say this isn't epic. -Maker

More pictures to come!

Today's Reflection

Today, I finished my Window Into Another World. Image to come, sorry, the Internet is flickering in and out..
Anyway, it looks pretty good to me. Post any opinions you guys have on how to make it look better.

Sorry for the late post:

Right now, I'm working on a picture of an evil cat that rules over that dimension...Again, picture to come soon!

Final Project

We've started working on our final for this semester. Our assignment is to create a two-page spread in Pages to showcase three pieces of our work in a program of our choice (Illustrator [Yeah....no], Photoshop, etc.) I used Photoshop. My work today was creating a "Window into another World", a window with panes that have different landscapes. I don't have a picture of it quite yet; I'm still working on the details. Today was a pretty successful day, and I'm happy to be working on another Photoshop project.

Adobe Illustrator and Pixels & Vectors

The main assignment today was to play in Adobe Illustrator. Another name for this program would be...well, something not very nice. I thought Photoshop was bad...Illustrator is an entirely new beast. It's like figuring out the most complicated math problem in the world and then finding out that they made another one while you were solving it.
Yeah..I don't like Illustrator. All of the tutorials that we looked at were either too complicated or not helpful at all, because they were outdated. I ended up with this somehow...

What IS that? I think it could be a piece of lost alien technology, but who knows?
Anyway, we also needed to look at the difference between a picture made of pixels, and a picture made of vectors. Vector based imagery is based on using lines (vectors) to draw an image. The vectors are resolution independent, because scaled, they are still the same resolution (As sort of demonstrated above). Pixel based imagery is based on using pixels, which are individual units in the image, to make an image- they're resolution dependent, because if you scale a pixel, it becomes blurrier. Each pixel has its own place in the picture in pixel-based imagery, while in vector-based imagery points, lines, curves, and polygons are used to make an image.

Reflection Today

Today, I finished my "Foods of the Week" chart (Apparently, a week only has six days now. ;).. Also, I skipped breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, as you may have noticed.)

I'm also almost done with my human-made-out-of-food. I need to finish it after Thanksgiving Break.
(Will post citations later)

Reflection - Nov. 18

Today, I started making my Foods of the Week Numbers chart. We're supposed to document everything we eat for an entire week, and then make a picture of ourselves out of the foods we ate. Unfortunately, that means that I have to go eat some foods I don't normally eat now. ;)...
Anyway, today, NoodleTools decided to be unusable (Every time I tried to log in, the screen would freeze.), so I couldn't really do much with the foods. I found a picture of lettuce, though, and I was able to cite it so that I could use it for my hair. This seems like a really fun project to work on, if I can get my citations to come through. (Sorry, I can't post my progress because I'm not about to show my picture to you guys. :D)
Also, I decided to use my mustache cat for my desktop background, if it matters at all. I was told that if a hippie walked in right now, he'd think it was really psychedelic.

Edit: At the end of class, I did end up getting NoodleTools working again. I got one or two citations for next period, so yay for me.

Reflection -Today

Today, I did the small essay below on the article "Inside the War against China's Blogs". Then, I worked in Photoshop until I finished my Text Cat, shown in the right. Text Cat also appears to be wearing a jacket, which is perfectly fine if you think about it since cats are evil masterminds anyway.
Guess what this is?
I'll consider putting a background on the cat, but for now that's my end result. Enjoy! (P.S. The green Cats are eyes.)

The War against China's Blogs

I'd never thought there was such a thing as dishonest blogging. Unfortunately, the news in this article about groups that 'help' multinationals around the web has changed my mind completely.

Companies around the world have started a business in helping multinational companies such as Nike and McDonald's control the web by monitoring blog posts and 'killing off' any negative comments. They also provide positive feedback through bloggers that get paid about $0.015 each post or topic they make, a decent incentive for making up propaganda that helps or criticizes a company. Actually, they don't even have to make it up- the company even writes out the posts, and they just have to copy it somewhere.

Honestly? That's just wrong. I understand that they're trying to make a business out of things, but there are probably many other ways to do something more honest than what they're doing now. I'm pretty sure that there's an evil mastermind that writes up all of the propaganda that's laughing evilly right now, actually.
Sure, some companies are doing this for a good reason. Daqi, for example, helped Metersbonwe Group, a retailer in the Forbidden City, get a lease for a larger store after the group got evicted from its old space for a Nike store. However, I believe that it's only a matter of time until the groups are there purely for the purpose of getting companies to hire them to ridicule their enemies. Groups like these, in my opinion, destroy the very structure of the Internet and violate one of the unspoken rules of honesty in the blogging world. Why should they be given the power to just, as the article put it, 'squelch' negative information? I understand that bloggers seldom change their minds about a subject (Unless, of course, offered a large amount of money), so asking them to change their posts would be very difficult. However, just destroying their opinions is very dishonest, in my opinion.

In conclusion, my opinion is that the companies doing this for 'good' (Good is, of course, by perspective) reasons, such as Daqi does on occasion, should (by ethic morals) keep doing it only for 'good' reasons, like helping domestic retailers. However, the companies that hire people to post negative feedback about another company should be stopped. People are entitled to their own opinions, and they shouldn't be influenced by the amount of money they can be paid to express it.

Typography

Today, we learned about typography in class. Typography is what language looks like; it is the art of using letters and words to design a visual display on a page. Web designers, artists, and other people who work with art can specialize in typography to make works of art. This includes any form of words. Obviously, people who specialize in this type of work are sought after by big companies to design displays, because they can make the words pop out of a page or attract the attention of a person seeing it. For example, my attention would be more caught by a large neon board with words that seemed to pop out then, say, a normal advertisement with exactly 14 type font across the paper. Even graffiti, illegal as it is, is still a form of typography- to be honest, some types of graffiti catch my attention more than any billboard.
I think that typography is a large part of any industry or company, since it gives a way for the consumer to see the product easily. Typography can also be used in company logos. Certainly, I appreciate all the typographers in the world who can catch my attention with a well-designed advertisement.

I've also provided an example of a form of typography below. If you scroll all the way down on my blog, you can see an example of a program called 'Spell with Flickr'. It lets you type in anything you want, and then Flickr will spell it out for you. It's a pretty decent program to use, and it's certainly something entertaining. I didn't expect the HTML code to be so long when I copy and pasted the script over, though!

Next, we had to identify #1-16 in This Diagram.
1) Tail                                 9) Stem
2) Spline                             10) Finial
3) Apex                              11) Link/Neck
4) Serif                                12) Loop/Lobe
5) Bowl                               13) Ear
6) Spur                                14) Extender (Ascender)
7) Eye/Counter                    15) Diagonal Stroke or Diagonal Stem, Arm?
8) Extender (Descender)      16) Crossbar

I'm not sure about #3, I couldn't find it anywhere. Even Googling it, the best I could find was a 'vertex', which was because the top of an A is similar to the bottoms of a 'w'. Also, I'm not sure about the orders of #4, #6 and #10.

I've also started working on a cat text image. It's not turning out as well as I'd hoped, but I think it's okay so far. I don't think I'm that good at this typography stuff...

That's the beginning, anyway.
(For the original, see the Devil Cat's original picture below.)
See you next time!

What I did today

Sorry! I didn't do anything today at all. We had testing today, so we only had a half hour in class (Not even that much, to be honest.) Our 'assignment' was to finish anything we didn't finish last time, and since I finished, I didn't have anything to do. I slept for an hour and a half after the test, so I'm tired. Anyway, see you next time!

Photoshop Today

Today, we followed a tutorial in Photoshop to learn all the skills that a novice at Photoshop needed to know. We transformed this picture...

Into this picture...
Not too bad, I think! To make the second picture, we used a lot of the tools in the 'Image' tab in Photoshop. I used the 'Auto Levels' tool in the Adjustments tab, learned how to use contrast to make the image look better, used 'Soft Light' for my layer, and made it black and white. Then, I cropped and resized my image (I made it a bit bigger only- The tutorial told us to make it about 800 x 600. I made mine about half that size...) Also, I added a small black border around it.

I did the same thing in this picture:

Reflection

So, twelve weeks total have passed since I started taking this class. So far, I have to say that I'm enjoying the second set of six weeks more than the first. The beginning of this six weeks was finishing the project in Pages, and now that that's over, I'm really happy. I didn't mind the project as much in the end, since it was mostly research and creativity to create the itinerary. The Hex-Code, RGB and CMYK ideas interest me a lot, since I've done hex-code before. We've also played with a spectrometer, which I didn't understand for a little while until I found out why people used it. Right now, we're learning about Photoshop, a program that I respect for its many uses. At least, I don't have it messing me up yet (Key word there, of course, being 'yet.').
I think I've been on task for the majority of this six weeks. All of my blog posts have been very detailed, and I spend all of my class time working (Or learning by playing around) in Photoshop. It's really helped me to stop playing games and to keep learning just by playing in a program. I think that I've also learned things faster and easier by focusing more on the task at hand.
Hope for a great last six weeks before Christmas!

Photoshop

I'm starting to love Photoshop again...
Anyway, today, our class started out by taking a small quiz on the Principles of Color. It was pretty easy, and I got through with it pretty fast.
Then, we went into Photoshop to start using the "pen" tool. We started out with an original picture (As shown below) from a stock image website, and added a white layer. Then, we added another layer, and went over the outline and details in pen. Then, we stroked the lines with a pressured brush to give it a good effect. Finally, I used the brush tool to fill in a background and words. You can see my result below!

Photoshopped:

Yes, the intended effect was a devil-cat. With a mustache, of course.

Next, we used the same process as above, except we used Photobooth
and edited an image of ourselves.
Say Hi to Me!
Photoshop is so much fun, isn't it?

Color Box

Today, I got to play with a color box. "What is a color box?" You ask. This is a color box. http://cybercollege.com/colors/tabbedcolorbox.html

At that link, you get to merge different types of colors to make new colors. We can mix the original shades of light- RGB (Red, Green, and Blue), pigments (CMYK- Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and mix them all to get K, Black.) Then, we could 'print' things, to show how real publishers control the color in their articles and to show what happens if the colors used are unbalanced.

First, I went to the Mixing Light tab. Then, I combined colors to get the following:
1 Cyan = Blue + Green
2 Magenta = Red + Blue
3 White = Blue + Green + Red
4 Yellow = Green + Red
5 Black = No colors

Then, I went to the Mixing Pigments tab. I combined pigments to get the following:
1 Red = Yellow + Magenta
2 Blue = Cyan + Magenta
3 White = No colors
4 Green = Cyan + Yellow
5 Black = Cyan + Yellow + Magenta

(Note: The first three colors are the ones we were told to find; the rest are just for reference later on.)

Finally, I went to the 'Color Printing' tab and changed the colors to find out how a printer works.
When Yellow was slowly tuned down (This printer just used CMY), the black turned slowly from black to a shade of purple and then blue. With no yellow at all, there's a brighter shade of blue- probably something like a 'royal blue' color.

As Cyan was turned down, the black combination turned to a shade of dark brown, then brown, then a dark red, and finally, with no cyan, yellow and magenta made a bright red color.

That was all we were told to do, but I turned down Magenta to see what happened anyway. The yellow and the cyan did pretty much what I expected, making a dark and then light shade of green.

For the rest of the period, I spent my time looking at photoshop tutorials. I can't wait to start here, since I know that photoshop is essential for my animation class as well, for designing templates. It's definitely going to be a useful thing to know how to do.

Spectrometers

Spectrometers are devices that collect and measure the amount of light that a color gives off, and gives us a number to represent the intensity of the color. It works by measuring the intensity of the color and how it absorbs the light to give off a color.

Today, we did a sort of lab where we chose a color and used a spectrometer to measure how much light is given off with each type of colored light- Blue, Cyan, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Deep Red, and four interred lights. Then, we did the same thing on a white color, and divided the original results with those results to get results that could form a sort of spectrum.

I didn't really know what to expect, so I didn't get any unexpected results for my data. Looking at the other data samples, I didn't do anything wrong, so nothing was too unexpected.

We used different printers to print out the colors to use with the spectrometer. When our teacher put all of our spectrums next to each other, I found out that the other printers made the results a little bit different for Cyan, with a steeper or less steep slope and different results. The graphs, though, generally had the same shape, so the printers only changed the height of the spectrum.

In my opinion, hex codes have more relation to RGB than CMYK, because the RGB values match up with the hex codes values directly. What I mean by that is the Red value coincides with the first two numbers of the hex code- the 00 in #00FFFF. The Green value coincides with the second two- the 00 in #FF00FF. The Blue value coincides with the last two numbers- the 00 in #FFFF00. So, RGB has more in common with the hex codes than CMYK to me.

I think that spectrometry is important for publishers with color in their articles or other works, because they need to know specifically what colors they're using so that they can use that specific color in a printer. Some publishers are limited in the number of colors they can use, so a malfunction or misuse of a spectrometer could be disastrous. If no spectrometer is used, the colors in the actual printed newspaper or other type of media could be off, and mess the article up.

So, in conclusion, spectrometers are important. :)

October 27, 2010 iPhoto Challenge

Our assignment today was to make a perfect copy of a photo that our teacher showed us. To do this, we went into iPhoto and used the effects and editing tools to change this picture :
Native Dancer  to this picture:

My version:

to this picture:

Pretty close, isn't it? I went into iPhoto and used the edit tool to do this. I enhanced the original photo, and added a Boost Color effect. Then, I went into the "Adjust" function and put the contrast to 30 and saturation to 51. I also put shadows to 25 and de-noise to 10. Then, I zoomed into the photo and used the re-touch function to straighten out the dancer's cheek and necklace.

That's it for today. So far, iPhoto has been pretty good to me, even if it
took a little while to figure out the re-touch function. I really do like this
program (Not that it compares to photoshop or anything), so hopefully
we'll be working in it a bit more.

Edit: Sorry, will fix the link on the second picture. I didn't know
that it would break.

RGB, CMYK, and Hex Codes

Today, for our second assignment, we did a page on RGB, CMYK, and Hex Codes, the three things used to make colors on a printer or computer. I've done some hexadecimal in a class once, so I'm a little more familiar with these codes.
We did an assignment to do this:
https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9aIgWEtuCXgY2ZiZThhZmYtODFlMi00NTdmLTk1NjMtN2E3YmIxYzdhYTdl&hl=en&authkey=CL-ArLIK

The grey code is on the second page, sorry, Google Docs messed up. This document will probably be really useful in the coming days if we have to do other things with hex codes, since this document can be used as a base for all of it. Use it well!

Starting in iPhoto

Let me start off with saying: I've had some pretty bad experiences with iPhoto. A couple years ago in my Technology class, my partner and I worked in iPhoto to make a stop motion animation. We spent forever trying to work iPhoto to our benefit, using over 600 frames, and all that work nearly came to naught as iPhoto took nearly an hour to import all of the pictures and then crashed on us.

With all of that in mind, I still have some hopes for iPhoto. It's a great program, and has a lot of potential- if it doesn't end up killing me again.

(One of) Our assignment(s) today was to to manipulate a stock photo, which I did.

Before:

For this assignment, I used nearly all of the iPhoto options: I cropped the picture, rotated it a little bit, enhanced the color, retouched it, added a bright effect and adjusted some of the contrast, definition, and exposure.

13th and Last Day of working in Pages

Finally, after a nearly month-long trek, my time of working in Pages is over.
I have to say, I'm really happy with what I've done, but I still dislike the program. I prefer Microsoft Word.
Here's the full project- cover, itinerary, work log and bibliography:
https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9aIgWEtuCXgYWZhZmZkMzMtZGNkNi00NDk3LWEwOTEtNWYyMTEyZjA3ZmVl&hl=en&authkey=CNTb4Z8D
(Note: The first page's background was cut off by Google Docs. Sorry!)

Here's the brochure for the trip- Some of the things have been changed (The script next to the protection screen reads: We are still not responsible for your children. ;) )

Here's to never working in Pages again! *Clink*

P.S.- Did anyone notice that we've finished the project on an unlucky number day?

12th day of working in Pages

It's been a pretty decent day, today, overall. With the exception of our school emails crashing (Don't ask), I've gotten a lot of work today. I did a lot of work at home and emailed it to myself, though, and I forgot what I did, so I've probably redone a lot of the stuff I did at home in class today.
So anyway, I finished Florence and most of Naples in class today. Checks!
Only a couple more cities to do, and Sicily. Yay~

10th and 11th Days of working in Pages

Our 10th day of working in Pages was more of a half day, so I decided to combine both of the days in one post. I've started work on my Itinerary, and I have around 6 of the 20 days done already- it takes a while to research all of the places, even though I've already been to Italy myself. I learned that about 20-22 Citations can fit on one page, so I have my citations in halves now for each section. It's taken over 50 citations total..and will probably take a lot more before I'm done.

Venice: Check
Bologna: Check
Pisa: Check
Florence: Working on it!
Rome: Not done
Naples: Not done
Capri: Not done
Sicily: Not done

I might end up working on the itinerary at home, and then emailing to myself to put in Pages here. That might be a good idea...
Cheers!

Ninth Day of iWorking in Pages

(Please tell me that someone noticed the joke in the title.)
Yes, that does mean I'm in a semi-good mood. I'm now mostly finished with my brochure, which really does resemble the one I drew out in the plan a long time ago. The first page has the three columns, just like in the plan, but the second page has a couple changes. There are more pictures and some more descriptions around the page, which I thought were needed to give extra information to the potential 'travelers'. The designs are consistent, though, and I'm happy with what I have for the brochure.
https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9aIgWEtuCXgOTBmM2M5NzItY2M1Ny00MGM2LWE4M2UtM2E3NjdiNmMzZmVj&hl=en&authkey=CO-ppPUG is the original Introduction, with some changes and editing. Unfortunately, the background on the first page is still white, due to a Google Docs error.
https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9aIgWEtuCXgYzcxZGI1NmMtY2RjZS00MzRhLWIzYmQtZWIxMzQ4ZTVhNjZi&hl=en&authkey=CN_iyM0E is the new Brochure. Enjoy! Sorry if some of the text is illegible, though none of it should be. Google Docs error, again.

Edit: Sorry, changed the brochure for cost approximations.

Day 8 of Working in Pages

Today, I pretty much finished my brochure. I have to go back and make some edits, such as learning how to take out the double spacing in text boxes, but that's about it. I have over 35 citations in my bibliography- That's amazing, isn't it? It took me a long time, too.
So, next time, I'll just make final revisions on my brochure before uploading it as another PDF file. I also have to update my work log (Which is all of these things) and my bibliography.

(You may notice my log posts are getting shorter. I suppose that means that everything's running along more or less smoothly, right?)

Day 7 of working in Pages

Today, I worked on my brochure for the most part. My teacher posted up examples of the best files in our class (My old PDF file was in it- Yay!) and they gave me some ideas. I may change my project a little bit to make it look better later on. I'll definitely finish (most of) my brochure next class.

Day 6 of working in Pages

Today I remade everything I lost from the operating system wipeout. It's very similar to what I posted earlier, in the PDF file, except with some grammar editing and a new title. Then, I started working on my brochure. It's going along pretty well, even though citing everything is fairly time consuming. I hope to finish the brochure by next class, though that's probably unlikely.

Brochures

Today, our teacher showed us some examples of brochures and told us to comment on which brochures caught our eyes the most. These two really got my attention:

And

http://gotwood.bfrancesi.com/images/portfolio/australia.jpg

These two really caught my eye as soon as I looked at the list. The "Gateway to China's Future" brochure has a great design on the front and makes you just want to look into it more, and the color scheme makes it all the more interesting. The Australia brochure has a very nice background and seems to balance out the amount of text and pictures very well. My brochure will probably be more like the Australia brochure, but the Gateway brochure was certainly a good example of what a good color scheme can do.

Today's Work (Day 5)

Well, besides posting that rant/overview of the six weeks, I did pretty much nothing today. Sorry, folks! Next class, though, I'll focus on remaking my Pages project. I still can't believe it was all wiped out...anyway, I'll definitely work harder next class. Today, I pretty much relaxed a day and played games.

Rant & The Latest 6 Weeks

Well, our first six weeks of working in this class are over. :(
I've really enjoyed this class so far, all difficulties and grievances aside. It's been easy at times and hard at times, but I think I've done well. I've learned a lot of things about making a blog and keeping it up, about how my Mac works, netiquette, and about working in Pages. Making a blog was, in my opinion, the more fun thing to do since we could be as creative as we wanted to and had a lot of themes to think about. But, maybe I'm just saying that because our school installed new operating systems onto these Macs, which effectively destroyed our Pages projects. Yes, that happened. *Sigh*. One more reason for me to hate, right? Couldn't they have at least, like, backed it up, or something? I don't know.
Anyway, the skills I've learned could really help my future. The blog seems like a great and organized way to keep track of everything you need to do, and keeping in touch with people you know. It could be a great center for everything in college or late high school for homework and other kinds of things as well. Netiquette will certainly help me later on, even though it was implanted in my head at a very early age. (My teacher in elementary school for technology was very strict on netiquette.) After all, saying the wrong thing could get me in big trouble. As for Pages, well, if I have to ever use a Mac I suppose it would be useful to know how to make documents in it. I still definitely prefer PCs to Macs.

My Favorite Projects

This morning, I looked at some of my friends' projects in Pages, like my Italy one. My top three were:
Kel :] -It was one of the best I'd seen- great cover, great designs, a consistent font that added to the mood of the project and looked really great in contrast, and everything that needed to be done. ;

TheAsianLeprechaun-At first, I was laughing at the name of the country, but then I kept looking and it was a wonderful overall project. The cover was beautiful and instantly captured my attention, and the rest of the project was great as well. The brochure especially was really good. ; https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B-yY_l0l8tS2NGNjOGY1OGItNWZkYy00YWM2LWE2MTAtYWVhOTI1MDIxMjJi&hl=en&authkey=CK6U9osO

Big Taco- His was the best example that a great color scheme can grab your attention and make the project look a lot better. I'm going to go fix mine before self-grading myself, actually. ; https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0ByuByHN_AFlUMjQyZTE1NDQtMzc1Ni00MjJjLWJjNzQtYTM1NmE4ODhmOWQ0&hl=en&authkey=CLOFm10

Right, time for the self-assessment.
General- 3 1/2?, I actually just added the headers and footers myself. The page numbers were there already. However the design style is still a bit off.
Cover- 4, It has a lot of images related to Italy, a title and has a good design style.
Table of Contents- 4, Neatly labeled with all color schemes in order.
Work Log; Initial Design- 4, I have everything listed with explanations for everything.
Bibliography and Bibliography Citations- 4 each, I have well over 12 citations and everything is neatly colored.
Professionalism- 4, I have no typos or grammar mistakes of any kind.

Cheers! This is pretty much all I did today, but I also started on my brochure. My mouse's scroll button is a bit broken, so it's a bit annoying, but it's okay.

The fourth day of working in Pages & My PDF File

Hello again, everyone. It's my fourth day of working in this program...I can't wait for it to be over. Anyway, today, I finished up my cover page, table of contents, a whole page of bibliographies, and my work-log, which is basically what I posted on this blog for the first three days. Anyway, here's the link in a PDF File https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9aIgWEtuCXgZTRmNGZiODQtZGJiNi00NDhjLTgyM2UtOWJhNTRlMDJkOWVh&hl=en&authkey=COT6rKoL.
Yes, it's in Google Docs. The process was surprisingly easy to do- I just had to reduce the Pages document, save it as a PDF, upload it onto Google Docs and make it so anyone could see it. It was really easy and only took me 5-6 minutes to do. However, Google Docs hates on backgrounds- The cover page has a background on the bottom half and the Table of Contents also has a background, but Google Docs decided not to show them. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I hope you like it!

Day Three of Working in Pages

So today I came into class happy and cheerful. By the middle of class, I was decidedly less cheerful. Pages is once again thwarting all of my attempts to be happy and cheerful with it.
My first obstacle today was the lack of an "insert" key on Mac keyboards, which on PCs lets you replace current text with new text as you type. Most people say this is a great annoyance to them, but if you had a perfect setup on your work and just needed to add things to the first page without affecting the other ones, you might want an insert key. Too bad there wasn't one.
So, instead of making my cover on the Pages document with my itinerary, I decided to open up a new template and use that instead. I used the "Garden Project Poster Large" format and replaced all the images with stock photos and replaced the text with my own cover wording. Then, I had to go back to my bibliography program and cite every last image that I used, which took about twenty minutes with all 7 photos and the websites and databases. After that, I emailed the bibliography to myself and copy and pasted it into Pages, where it came up as a small text box. After resizing the box, the bibliography took up pretty much all of one page.
So, to sum it up- Today I finished most of my cover and bibliography as well as changing my table of contents a little. I guess I'm learning more about what a Mac can and cannot do, as well.

Day two of working in Pages

Our rubric for this project is finally up. http://cms.springbranchisd.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=2nKgqr0XtHo%3d&tabid=12561&mid=29208...
Riiiight. Time for my daily hat- reflection on Pages. Anyway, I finally figured out how to make arrows on an image so that I can show my travel route in Italy. Yay! Then, I fixed my itinerary to be more realistic and researched the ways to get around Italy. Getting around Italy in a train is normal, and so that's what my group will be doing. From Bologna to Pisa we'll have to take a bus, though, and we'll have to take boats to Capri and Palermo in Sicily. Today, I started making the cover page for my project and started getting information about my cities as well. When I get home, I'll probably try to start up on my bibliography.
On another note, Mac keyboards are totally working against me- The keys feel so different compared to PC keyboards, and it's messing me up. Also, I haven't added any pictures to the itinerary- I'll attempt to jump over that obstacle when I hit it. (I'll probably fail somehow, too)

Day 1 Working on the Pages Project

You know how I said that I didn't mind using Pages? I take that back. I despise Pages. It can go and take itself out of my Mac and I'd be fine with that. Today, I uploaded my plan to this blog (See below post) and started working on this project. I instantly ran into a problem as I tried to search for a map of Italy. Then, when I finally found one, I couldn't move it behind my text and make an arrow to point from one place to another. This project is definitely not one of my favorite ones so far.

Plan for Italy Project

There's my plan for the Pages project we're doing in class. Sorry it's so blurry, the lightning is way off even though I Auto-Toned it in Photoshop... anyway, on the left you can see the plan for the Travel Brochure: two pages, with three columns on the first page and about nine pictures and a brief overview of the trip on the second page. On the right you can see the itinerary, which includes the table of contents on the first page and the actual itinerary and travel plan on the second page. After that, page 3 - page x (however many I need) will be in depth information about the trip and the cities.
Hope to have the project done soon. I hate projects in Pages or Microsoft Word that aren't just essays, but it'll have to do.

Things you should or should not use in a project.

Today, we're going to begin our new project in Pages with the countries. Before we do, though, we had a couple things to learn about so we didn't get into any legal trouble.

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's work in your own projects and saying that it was your work. When you look at a sentence online, you would have to restate everything you read in a completely different way to avoid plagiarism. There are very good reasons to avoid plagiarism in any station of life: as a student, plagiarism would get you into detention, ISS, or maybe even suspension. For sure you would get a 0 on your assignment. In college, plagiarism can result in expulsion from the school and a note in their permanent record. In a real job, you would probably lose your job, and it would be pretty hard to find another one.

In our blogs, we will have to cite our sources. To cite our sources, we will use our teacher's little special method of citations1. In our itinerary and facts, we will use a small footnote to link the project paper to our bibliography, which will have all the necessary information about the citation- The author, title of the work, location found, date published and date used, website, etc.

Stock Photography is a set of photos that were collected for people to use instead of needing a professional to take the pictures instead. Commercial stock photography makes you have to pay to use the photos, but a lot of stock photography is free for people who create accounts on a website. It's a lot better to go onto a free, public stock photography site instead of finding random images off Google because Google images can be copyrighted, and the owners of the picture could contact their lawyers and sue the person who used the picture without permission.

An image that is 'Public Domain' has no property rights and no copyrights. These are normally pictures that have an expired copyright. They still need to be cited, of course.
